Sandbox

In the Sandbox innovation space, technology tests are performed with existing solutions with a degree of maturity of level 6 (Application demonstrator) to level 8 (Beta solution). Here, the user defines the faced challenge together with armasuisse S+T, which maps it  in a realistic test environment. This is then made available to potential solution providers to demonstrate and test their technological solution.

Two different tools are shown. Above one is a cross and above one a good sign.
By means of an open invitation to tender and on the basis of predefined evaluation criteria, solution providers are invited to submit their solution approach, available at least as an application demonstrator (SRL level 6), and to participate in the technology tests. The solution providers demonstrate their proposed solution in the test environment made available to them. The goal is to assess different technology solutions with regard to their suitability to meet demand. When the Sandbox is completed, the participants are provided with an observation report on their solution.

armasuisse S+T had already applied the concept of the sandbox before the formal launch of the innovation spaces DDPS. For example, in autumn 2021, a comprehensive test on the current status of drone defence technologies was carried out with industry in Bure, Switzerland. Another implemented sandbox dealt with technologies for automated recording of serial numbers on weapons. This sandbox was carried out in 2023 together with the Armed Forces Logistics Organisation and industry.
